Kiln time

Article Abstract:

The British brick industry has invested in modern plant and equipment but faces problems due to the recession. Falling demand has led to the closure of many smaller brickworks and the merger of firms. The market is still dominated by London Brick Company but its margin is being eroded by Redland, which has recently taken over Steetley, and third placed Butterley. However, the industry has successfully modernised and should be able to cope with future demand.

Good deal stronger

Article Abstract:

US timber group Trus Joist MacMillan's Micro-Lam engineered wood product is newly available in the UK for use as a structural material. The product is a man-made timber formed by bonding graded veneers together into laminated sheets and is lighter and stronger than traditional timber materials. However, it may cost up to two and a half times more than traditional sawn timber. Suggested uses include timber framed houses.
