Article Abstract:

There is likely to be growing emphasis on value, rather than price, in the UK construction industry as a result of government plans to ensure that public bodies select contractors on the basis of value. The lowest price approach has dominated the construction industry for many years, but it is now being recognized that this is a short-term solution that can bring long-term problems. It will always be important to consider contractors' prices, but it is clear that price should never be the overriding factor.

Giving what it takes

Article Abstract:

The precise role of the managing director will vary from company to company, but in all cases the managing director must be aware of the limits to his or her authority. Managing directors must work very closely with the board, and must always consider how they are regarded by their colleagues. A managing director's general management skills and personality have as much significance, if not more, than his or her technical or financial abilities.

Spreading the word

Article Abstract:

The UK construction industry would benefit from using plain English when drawing up contracts and developing projects, as many people are bewildered and confused by the complex language used in all forms of paperwork. Offering clear examples of former projects would help establish a greater understanding of terminology used by the industry, as would the inclusion of active demonstrations.
