Article Abstract:

Government figures show that the number of deaths on UK construction sites fell from 90 in 1987 to 76 in 1998, although construction accidents have grown from 4,054 to 4,200 in the same period. A safety inspection exercise of six sites in London, carried out by industry periodical 'Building', shows that unsafe working practices and hazardous equipment are commonplace. One subcontractor told the magazine that many major contractors just pay lip-service to safety factors and are only interested in ensuring that work is done quickly.

Article Abstract:

Architectural firm GML has been working as project architect on the conversion of Pembroke House, a 1960s office block in City Road, London, England, into The Lexington, an exclusive apartment development. The project has involved removing half the concrete roof of a 10-storey tower and creating an enlarged floor-to-ceiling glass front for penthouse apartments. On the four-storey block which also forms part of Pembroke House, a further storey has been added, creating an additional 350 sq mt of floor space.
