It is important that UK subcontractors are aware that most contractors will not suddenly begin treating them more fairly as a result of the Construction Act. Subcontractors should still exercise caution in their dealings with contractors. They should monitor the length of payment cycles, for example, and should check whether the contract makes any reference to enforcement of an adjudicator's decisions. Specialist contractors must become fully familiar with the Construction Act if they are to avoid being exploited.

Bovis' little white book
Article Abstract:
UK construction firm Bovis has drawn up a new subcontract, which will become effective in Spring 1998, when new legislation reform begins with the introduction of the Construction Act. The subcontract document sets out guidelines for dealing with subcontractors in relation to payment, adjudication and working rights. Bovis is the first construction firm to draw up such a document, which is in line with regulations suggested in the Construction Act.
