John Martin is national credit manager for Graham Builders Merchants. He uses a computerised system to administer the accounts of customers and to chase outstanding debts. Martin has seen bad debts treble since 1989 but believes the worst is over for most of the UK. He blames large contractors for not paying smaller firms on time and banks for being too hasty in recalling loans. Graham Builders Merchants checks new customers thoroughly, holds insurance against non-payment and uses incentives to encourage payment on time.

Article Abstract:

Variable air volume systems (VAV) are more costly to install, maintain and run compared to other air conditioning systems, such as four-pipe fan-coil, reverse heat pump and 3-pipe variable. VAV systems also require up to 10% more space than other systems because of plant rooms, chillers and riser ducts. Buildings have to be higher to conceal ductwork, silencers and valve boxes. Electric space heating and cooling systems are much cheaper to install, maintain and run and are easier to control.

Article Abstract:

The new Olympic stadium in Atlanta, Georgia is expected to be finished in autumn 1995. It will house the Olympic games and the subsequent Paralympic games for the disabled. The stadium will then be converted to a ball park as a home for the Atlanta Braves baseball team. The arena will have to be remodelled although the stadium has been designed for its dual role.
