Greek impediment

Article Abstract:

The architectural design of Coventry's new bus station fails to achieve a classical feel with its stone-effect classical pediment motif at the entrance of the building. The building has been built using design and build concepts where its budget has been restricted so that the employer did not have to pay more than initially intended. Coventry city architects were used for the contract, which has disappointed many within the industry.

A moving experience

Article Abstract:

Public buildings are rarely so well planned that signposts are not needed. Building designers often omit vital directional information because they have become very familiar with the building layout in the course of their work. Terminal four at Heathrow airport in London, England, lacks sufficient signs to direct new visitors. An example is given relating the chaotic experience of far eastern visitors at the airport.

Mellowing with age

Article Abstract:

Buildings designed to require no maintenance are often ugly and drab. Maintenance-free building materials tend to wear badly and are in some circumstances expensive to repair. Buildings which are made from good quality materials, however, remain attractive as they get older. Natural wood finishes can be readily improved with a coat of paint.
