Article Abstract:

UK architects Hunt Thompson Associates is designing a 170 million pounds sterling HAT (Housing Action Trust) project which involves redesigning 3 run-down council estates and a new one at Waltham Forest, London. Up to the year 2002 the tower blocks will be demolished and replaced by terraced houses. Building will be phased. The firm are using a CAD system which has cost 100,000 pounds sterling. The system allows different information from different files to be overlaid on top of each other. The system is flexibile as specifcations such as size and numbers will be constantly changing.

Forging links with Tarmac has brought access to a wide range of designers and specialists for hotel designer Peter Inston. His joint venture with Tarmac, TBV Inston, has been operating since Dec 1994, and is expected to achieve fee income of around 3 million pounds sterling in its second year of trading. It currently has 15 confirmed commissions, with a further 15 projects still at the planning stage.

The poor image of house builders in the media in Britain, and the defensive reaction of the House Builders' Federation to criticism, are discussed. The need to accept government and consumer demand for better, energy-conscious house construction and design is stressed.
