Hi-Tec Hopkins

Article Abstract:

Architect, Michael Hopkins is firmly identified with the Modernist school. He began his own practice in 1976 and has been highly successful with a number of well known buildings. In the mid 1980s Hopkins appeared to change course away from a strictly Modernist style. However, he stresses the need for all construction to be structural and functional, whatever the material. His latest design for the New Parliamentary Building incorporates an innovative heating system which is expressed in the architecture.

The great architectural cover-up in the City

Article Abstract:

The City of London Corporation is exhibiting drawings and models of architecture designed for the City between 1985 and 1995. The exhibition gives the impression that the city planners have controlled development carefully and maintained the character of the City with quality buildings. However, the truth is that the planners allowed a free-for-all in an attempt to compete with the Canary Wharf developemnt. The Corporation has failed to preserve the style and quality of the City.

There's no fire prevention without smoke

Article Abstract:

About one listed building a year is burned down in the UK annually. Water does more damage to the building and its contents than fire. Fire precautions can destroy the aesthetics of the historic building, such as smoke detectors and sprinklers. In the US aircraft hangers are usually fitted with a foam deluge system. The foam does more damage than the fire and has resulted in drowning in some instances.
