A long wait for the rise of solar architecture

Article Abstract:

Solar architecture is in need of further development. The Third European Conference on Solar Energy and Urban Planning at Florence, Italy in Jun 1993 showed that solar architecture has a long way to go before it can be utilised world-wide. The cooling system at the Duisberg Business Promotion Centre in Germany, designed by the UK architect Sir Norman Foster is not functioning correctly as the roof has not been installed with cooling radiators. European Community funding is needed for further research.

The designs of the Czech-born, Eugene Rosenberg are the most futuristic. His 1930's designs predict the styles of the 1980's and 1990's.

Architectural conservation: a bridge too far?

Article Abstract:

Major 90s construction projects in the UK have focused on restoration of national monuments. This is a drain on public expenditure. Tower Bridge, London will close for repair in Apr 1993 causing major traffic problems. Over 50% of London's bridges are in bad disrepair needing constant attention. Alternatives need to be considered, such as architect Cedric Price's idea of decking over the Thames between Westminister Bridge and Blackfriars creating a new large South Bank.
