Hospital faces 10m pounds sterling reclad

Article Abstract:

A new report indicates that it may be necessary to completely replace the steel cladding on St Mary's Hospital in Newport, Isle of Wight, England, as a result of corrosion problems. This could cost up to 10 million pounds sterling. The repair programme will take several spring and summer seasons, and will force the closure of wards. The work will have to be funded by the taxpayer or by the private finance initiative, as the National Health Service is unable to make a further claim against the insurer of architect Ahrends Burton and Koralek.

Getting under the skin

Article Abstract:

St Mary's Hospital on the Isle of Wight, England, which was completed in Jun 1991, operates efficiently as a 200-bed acute hospital. It offers a high level of daylighting, and the interior is generally comfortable. However, the outside of the building has experienced many problems, especially the rusting of stainless steel wall and roof cladding. It now seems likely that the entire external envelope will have to renewed in the next few years, and remedial work could cost at least 10 million pounds sterling.
