It's a steel

Article Abstract:

Ward Building Systems is offering three small software programs which are designed to assist structural engineers in selecting the best section when designing a steel frame. Multibeam deals with purlin and cladding rail design, while Multichannel deals with channel sections and Multideck with the design of composite steel floors using metal decking. Each of the programs will run on an IBM-compatible 286 computer, and they are very easy to use.

Laying it on the line

Article Abstract:

SpiritLevels is a computer-aided design software package developed by US architects' group Microtecture. Some 300 packages are in use in the UK. SpiritLevels comprises five modules, including a 3D drafting system, application tools and calculation programs. Although it is a comprehensive package, it is complex and difficult to use, with poor documentation. This limits its advantages over other computer-aided design competitors.

The bottom line

Article Abstract:

It is very important to ensure that a sub-floor is of the right strength for the predicted loads, traffic and impacts which it will have to bear. The most popular heavy-duty insitu flooring is concrete base slabs, some of which can receive other floorings directly. It is vital that the correct thickness of screed is selected and that the right choice is made between bonded and unbonded construction.
