Sky high

Article Abstract:

It has been predicted building work at airports will be worth some 300 billion pounds sterling during 2000-2020. Many airports are expanding their services to cope with the increasing number of passengers and freight. It is anticipated the growth of e-commerce will lead to extra demand for worldwide freight transportation. Several airports in the UK are planning to expand, such as the new 1.5 billion pounds sterling terminal at Heathrow Airport, England. Many construction firms have found it difficult to break into the market as airports often use preferred companies for building work.

An ideal divorce

Article Abstract:

The division of Tarmac PLC into two separate businesses; building materials and construction, was a complicated problem for the firm's information technology (IT) department. Steve Connor was put in charge of creating a network for the new company, Carrillon. All documents had to be able to go out under the new name from 8am Jul. 30, 1999. They were given the previous 48 hours to complete the task whilst still having to offer an IT service as normal. Each of the new companies kept their own hardware but sorting out the relevant databases for each firm was more difficult.
