Low VAT programme

Article Abstract:

A group of materials makers in the U.K. have formed an organisation calling for the government to reduce value added tax (VAT) on energy-saving materials. The Association for the Conservation of Energy (ACE) hopes to change Britain's taxation laws in order to create more jobs in the construction industry. According to ACE, some 10,000 new jobs could be created if VAT on energy-saving materials, including insulation, is reduced from 17.5% to 8%. Additional benefits would include a decrease of emissions and lower energy costs.

Article Abstract:

Regus, which has 130 business centres offering serviced office accommodation, 30 of which are in the UK, is focusing on creating partnership agreements for contractors, developers and consultants. It demands very high standards from its partners, but is willing to allow specialist developers to have extensive control over procurement details. It is looking to become involved in conversion of existing buildings to high-tech offices and meeting rooms, as well as in the building of new offices.

Ice flows

Article Abstract:

A mixture of ice crystals and water can be used very effectively to cool a building, according to services consultant Hoare Lea and Partners. This system, which has been designed for a key UK government building, is based on the fact that a lot of heat is required to melt ice. Slush is easier to pump around pipes than fluids, and pump costs are therefore reduced. The company was able to show significant energy savings over the life of the building.
