Lumber crisis, Clinton plan top issues of 1993 convention

Article Abstract:

The National Assn of Home Builders of the United States (NAHB) 49th annual convention's most critical issue involved the rising lumber prices which has affected the housing industry. The problem stems from a shortage of lumber supply, triggered by the government's restrictions on the use of federal forests due to environmental concerns. The NAHB plans to urge Pres Clinton to conduct a Timber Summit to formulate solutions to the crisis. It calls for a policy that would balance environmental and economic issues and asks builders to find alternative building materials for lumber.

Satellite dish rule creates problems

Article Abstract:

The FCC has issued a new set of rules regarding homeowners' placement of little satellite dishes or broadcast and wireless cable antennas. Disputes have arisen as a result of differing interpretations, with some claiming that these requirements may infringe on the rights of the owner under the act by unjustifiably postponing installation or raising expenses. Industry objections have compelled the FCC to consider issuing a public notice that can provide clarifications.

More on the IRS cash-reporting rule

Article Abstract:

The IRS Publication 1544 states that cash purchases exceeding $10,000 are to be reported to the agency. Publication 1544 also considers cashier's checks, bank drafts, money orders and travelers checks worth $10,000 or less as cash and are also to be reported. Manufactured housing retailers, however, are not expected to inform the IRS of single payments of more than $10,000 but should disclose multiple or mixed payments of less than $10,000.
