MPA launches $10M offensive against USPS' rate case

Article Abstract:

The Magazine Publishers of America (MPA) will challenge the US Postal Service's proposal to increase rates by 15%. MPA is set to launch a $10 million campaign to lobby the Postal Rate Commission to reject USPS' application. MPA president Nina B. Link said the proposal will only transfer the inefficiences of USPS onto the shoulders of magazine publishers.

Lawsuit against Time Inc. claims false billings

Article Abstract:

Time Inc is facing a lawsuit for alleged false billings. Filed in late Jan 2001 in federal court, the suit claimed that the magazine publisher billed customers for subscriptions they did not order, then sent threatening collection letters asking for payment. The suit, which was filed by the law firm James, Hoyer, Newcomer and Smiljanich on behalf of James Chesther, charged Time with racketeering, deceptive and unfair trade practices, and violation of the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

DMers lobby against driver data bill

The direct marketing industry is lobbying against a privacy protection amendment placed $49.5-billion Senate Transportation Appropriations Bill. The "Shelby Amendment" would require drivers to give specific permissions to states before their license or motor vehicle registration data is released from state motor vehicle departments for any purpose except law enforcement. The DMVA data is being used by direct marketers to match or upgrade their databases for marketing auto-related products.
