Merit award: Hilton Head center meets Island's tough architectural controls

Article Abstract:

The auto/convenience center at Hilton Head Island, SC, won the Sterling Merit Award for Best auto/convenience center for 1992. Builder James Buck and architect Edwin Rodgers designed the facility to have a Low Country look in accordance with Hillton Head Island's stringent architectural codes. The center features a convenience store and separate auto service area arranged in such a way that the residential look is maintained. The canopies covering the gas pumps were made to look like a part of the convenience store roof. The convenience store used wood-framed construction while the auto service station is steel-framed.

Article Abstract:

Fasttrip Fastlube convenience center on Highway 65 in Hollister, MO, won the Sterling Merit Award for Best Auto/Convenience Center for 1992. Architect Larry Nelson of Springfield, MO, designed the complex with emphasis on access and traffic flow. Nelson oriented the pump island at a 30 degree angle to facilitate vehicle access to the pump while carwash entrances were located at the rear to prevent congestion in front of the building. The building also contains a separate island with water and air hose and a mechanical room in the pit area under the service bays. A second-floor mezzanine houses the manager's office.
