Mighty Mississippi shortens marinas' season

Article Abstract:

The flooded Mississippi River has continued to disrupt marina operators' and boat businesses since flowing out of its banks early in May 2001. High waters affect marine businesses through the loss of sales, both of dock facility services and retail products. Marina operators all the way from Minneapolis, MN, to St. Louis, MO, have suffered the most, either by being completely cut off from land traffic, submerged, or on reduced schedules.

Rules of thumb not science, but they're tested by time

Article Abstract:

A list containing time-tested rules of thumb for marina management is provided. Two marina slips are needed for every thousand in population in areas with reasonable good boating waters; some 10,000 boats requiring slips are sold every year; about 300 slips are needed by a marina to attain economies of scale and provide full services; the operating costs of a 300-slip marina is about $1,000 per slip.
