Modified bitumen roofing systems have been used successfully in the Us since the late 1970s. However, this active roofing market segment has continued to evolve and grow. Its popularity has been driven by the continued introduction of new installation equipment, membrane reinforcements and product standards. Additional installation training guidelines and videos are also being developed within the business. A survey by the National Roofing Contractors Assn in 2000 estimated the market share for modified bitumen at 23.2%.

Roofing contractors are concerned about sharp increases in the prices of asphalt coupled with fuel surcharges. Since spring 2000, they have not only contended with increasing asphalt, gasoline and propane costs, but also with multiple price increases on asphalt-based products and interest rates. Volatile stock market prices have further compounded their woes. Furthermore, a tighter job market has made it even more difficult for contractors to find qualified workers.
