NHBC to avoid politician as its chief

Article Abstract:

The UK National House Building Council (NHBC) has been criticized for having shadow environment secretary Sir Norman Fowler as its chairman. Some observers believe that Fowler's political role is incompatible with his NHBC role. For this reason, the NHBC will probably not appoint another politician as chairman when Fowler stands down in summer 1998 after serving for six years. The NHBC is strongly aware of the need to represent the correct balance of interests between the environment, housebuilders and consumers.

Balfour find record 1.2 million pounds sterling for Heathrow disaster

Article Abstract:

A failure to take proper health and safety precautions when constructing a rail tunnel link at Heathrow Airport, UK, resulted in a 1.2 million pounds sterling firm for construction firm Balfour Beatty in February 1999. The judgement came as a result of Balfour trying to reduce costs by limiting the number of site tunnelling experts from construction adviser Geoconsult. Australian-based Geoconsult was also fined 500,000 pounds sterling for its part in the tunnel collapse, which took place in October 1994.
