Nightmare on Canal Street

Article Abstract:

Many in the UK construction industry look to the efficient US construction industry model as an example of good practice. However, the $24 million Canal Street project in New Orleans illustrates that sometimes the reverse is true, with the scheme to build a bus maintenance garage being behind schedule, over budget and subject to costly design changes. The scheme, managed by general contractor Woodrow Wilson Construction, should have taken 456 days but a 148-day extension has been granted and $3 million added to the bill. Details of the problems associated with the project are presented.
