No jobs for the boys

Article Abstract:

The skills shortage which is emerging in the UK construction industry is the result of decisions taken since the second half of the 1980s by the country's leading contractors, according to many tradesmen. They feel that the situation will only be improved if contractors are willing to offer more apprenticeships, along with improved job security and more on-site training. At present, many young people do not want to enter the construction industry, especially as they regard it as offering very little job security.

Moving on down: Many major contractors are losing their younger managers to smaller and specialist contractors, as these offer a speedier route to the top, hands-on experience and real responsibility

Article Abstract:

Some major contractors are losing their younger managers to smaller and specialist contractors. Those staff who have move claimed that they are attracted by fast-track promotions and the hand-on responsibility, and not necessarily the salary. The larger contractors are keen to play down the issue of managerial shortages, claiming there is nothing new about specialists recruiting managers from the majors.
