Article Abstract:

Cable and Wireless' new telecommunications college in Coventry, West Midlands, UK has a project cost of 14.3 million pounds sterling. The completion date is Sep 6, 1993 when teaching will commence. The new college will offer specialised courses to 50 countries. The architect, MacCormac Jamieson and Pritchard has undertaken over 5,000 drawings. The main contractor is Birse Construction. The site which is 4.2 hectares will provide student accomodation, teaching facilities and administration accomodation. There are 2 presentation theatres, 20 lecture rooms and 22 training and research laboratories.

Article Abstract:

UK construction company Shepherd commenced the building of the 55 million pounds sterling prison on an island in the river Don, near Doncaster in Aug 1990. It is due to be completed in 1994. The category B prison will take 779 inmates. The project includes inmate accomodation, indoor and outdoor sport facilities, hospital, library, kitchen, shop, chapel and education centre. Construction methods have focused on security, such as insitu work to reduce the number of joints where objects could be secreted. Clugstone Construction constructed the second railbridge, river walls and site filling.

Article Abstract:

The competition for the design of a building to cover up the Chernobyl, Ukraine, nuclear reactor 4 radioactive wreckage did not result in any single winner being chosen from 394 entrants, but it did result in a lot of new ideas, and a short-list of four. In September 1993 an invitation to tender for a feasibility study to put together ideas from leading entries will be sent out. Before the end of 1994 work could start on preparation of the site.
