Olympic trials

Article Abstract:

Berlin's plans to host the 2000 Olympic Games are much better organised than Manchester's in the UK. Administrative problems caused by the Department of Envoronment are causing delays in Manchester. Manchester's scheme includes 3 major projects, the 170 million, 80,000 seater stadium, velodrome and arena. Four consortiums have entered the competition for the stadium. A decision was due on Jan 29 1993 which has yet to be annnounced. The design by architect Sir Norman Foster is the favourite. The other 2 projects already have management contractors. In contrast Berlin has the design and project under way and finance is secure.

Name dropping

Article Abstract:

The UK government has decided to abolish the ARCUK (Architects Registration Council of the UK.) The ARCUK was set up in 1931 to protect the public from builders claiming to be qualified architects. Its main functions are educational and disciplinary. RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) opposes this decision as it believes that this will result in confusion over the term 'architect' and encourage unprofessional work. RIBA will gain financially by the government's decision as architects will want to join the institute to obtain charter status which will distinguish them as professionals.

Anneka moves house

Article Abstract:

One of the BBC's 'Challenge Anneka' 1992 programmes involved moving a disused library in Ilfracombe, Devon to the Slade Valley, two miles away. Building contractors Pearce and others accepted and completed the challenge within the time limit of 51 hours. The project cost thousands of pounds sterling which was paid for by the contractors. However they felt that it was worth supporting the project as they obtained good publicity within prime television hours. Time was saved by avoiding the use of wet trades and by embedding a precast ring beam into semi-dry concrete.
