On the lighter side

Article Abstract:

The 1991 Building Regulations make sure that the collapse of a roof or roof structure does not result in the collapse of the whole building. The roof structure must be able to uphold any increased load or wind uplift. Additional trusses, rafters, bracing and purlins should be added if the structure is not sufficiently strong. The regulations will allow more use of lighter fibre cement slates due to lower price differentials between different materials. Fibre concrete slates absorb less water. The regulations also cover 'change of use' and snow loading advice.

Hard craft

Article Abstract:

The accepted qualification for UK craftsmen and bricklayers is the NVQ (National Vocational Qualification.) Employer-led orgainisations are responsible for identifying, establishing and recognising the NVQ. The construction industry's 2 leading NVQ bodies are the Construction Industry Training Board and the Construction Industry Standing Conference. NVQ's are independent of time and examinations as assessment takes place within the working environment and progesses at individual speeds according to abilities. Training relies on an industrial placement.

Putting windows in the frame

Article Abstract:

Dir of English Heritage John Fidler launched the Framing Opinion campaign in Apr 1991 to try and combat the decline in the appearance of historic buildings due to inappropriate alterations of windows. Repair instead of replacement of windows is cost effective and successful. Fidler is working with the Swedish Finnish Timber Council and the British Woodworking Federation to promote the type of specification used by an 1830s builder. Ventrolla has used its Perimeter Sealing System to refurbish and rebuild 1,100 windows at the Royal Citadel in Plymouth.
