Peace process

Article Abstract:

At a meeting on building contractual disputes Divisional Dir of builders Higgs and Hill, Colin Forrest and Chairman of architects D Y Davies, David Davies discussed their views. Both believe that lack of good management is the main cause of contractual disputes. Davies believes that architects are in a bad position as they act on client instruction. Client change of mind and the withholding of information, especially late information causes deep problems. Davies believes that architects should learn management skills. He approves of legislation to protect against late payment.

Finding fault

Article Abstract:

More communication is needed between architects and contractors to avoid contractual disputes and delays. RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) attempted to solve the problems of poor specifications and design by adopting the Standard Method of Measurement 7 and National Building Specification in 1987. There is still non-widespread application due to recessionary fee cuts. Architects condemn contractors for not studying their drawings in any detail and for failing to realise that design cannot be put under tight constraints.

Peace process

Article Abstract:

The UK construction industry is seen by many professionals as too factional, too adversarial and too expensive. Poor communication between engineers and architects and the existing contractual structure automatically results in conflict. Barriers between different factions should be dispensed with in favour of team work. The client should be the lead figure. Professional guidance could be given to the client through property/construction managers.
