Politicians back home repair TESSAs

Article Abstract:

The UK Building sector may benefit from proposals to finance household improvements after the general election, according to political representatives. Both Labour and Conservative parties will consider ways to improve the economy. The industry has introduced its ideas on taxation under the Home Improvement Tax Exempt Special Savings Account to the government and has already received positive feedback from the Labour party on the subject. The tax-exempt savings account Home Improvement TESSA is viewed as a favourable method of boosting home improvements.

'It's getting bad,' industry tells Bank of England

Article Abstract:

There are indications that the UK construction and property industries are beginning to be negatively affected by the worldwide economic slump. The number of planning applications being made has fallen, while tender enquiries have also declined. The third-quarter state of trade survey from the Construction Federation, due to be published on Nov 16, 1998, is expected to indicate that promises of higher public spending have not led to rising orders to replace a fall in commercial and telecommunications-related orders.

Contractors 'chock-a-block' with bids

Article Abstract:

Most leading construction contractors in the UK have seen a rise in enquiries from the private sector over recent months. However, they report that demand from the public sector is still very weak, and attribute this to the government's private finance initiative. There is strong optimism among private sector clients, with little concern being expressed about potentially negative political developments.
