Quite a racket over fair play

Article Abstract:

It is unlikely quantity survey adjudicators will be called upon to consider many cases of variations in contracts but their existence will influence contractors and quantity surveyors to act reasonably. The Standard Form Contract JCT80 refers to the management of the value of variations in construction projects. A contractor has to reply to a variation instruction, given by an architect, within 21 days stating the cost of the variation. The employers quantity surveyor either gives an alternative price or accepts the contractors price. The contractor has 14 days to accept the new price.

New delay fears hit Royal Opera House

Article Abstract:

Plans to open the newly restored Royal Opera House in London could be in jeopardy according to the contractor Balfour Kilpatrick. The completion deadline of December 1999 could be missed by up to two months it was revealed in a confidential letter, which states the finishing date is likely to be around the end of January 2000. The 220 million pounds sterling project has been hit by industrial action from electricians and site workers after complaints were made regarding workers' safety.
