Seeing cents

Article Abstract:

The US Department of State has developed a new method of competition to design a new embassy building in Berlin. The Foreign Buildings Operations (FBO) wanted to include a proactive cost-control system, and the design criteria called for a building with component parts that were financially balanced for long term use. Investments were made in life-cycle costs instead of expensive architectural finishes. FBO attempted to restrict the different approaches to quantity take-off and there was a need to incorporate flexibilty to allow for the wide variation in designs.

Practice makes perfect

Article Abstract:

The Building Research Establishment (BRE) has spent many years advising the construction industry on the best building methods, and is now to put its own research into practice when it builds its own office block. The 200 sq mt, 2.5 million pounds sterling building will set very high performance standards for developers, and will use many of the ideas developed by the Energy Efficient Office of the Future group.
