Service with a smile

Article Abstract:

Peter Rees, the Planning Officer for the Corporation of London, England, oversees the applications of real estate and office building developers. Rees plans to make a recommendation about the proposed Millennium Tower in May 1997. The tower which is planned to reach a height of 385 metres has already been the subject of much debate. Rees has an open style of working with the public and the media, although on some occasions this has caused some difficulties when he has been misquoted. Rees, who is known for his sense of humour, was an architect, which has given him an extra insight into building design.

Enlightened behaviour

Article Abstract:

Building companies in the UK are endeavoring to change the type of training their managers receive. Managers are being taught new skills in communication and are being trained to be less confrontational. Companies hope that changing the attitudes of their directors will lead to a change in the performance and behaviour of all their workers. Some companies report that their staff were initially reluctant to join in the new training schemes. Others report that a change in the behaviour of their managers was instrumental in their companies winning new contracts.
