Stadia design rethink promoted by Cardiff fiasco

Article Abstract:

Investigations into the load bearing capacities of stadium cantilevered stands has been jointly set up by the UK Institute of Structural Engineering and the UK government. The dynamics of cantilevered seating facilities need to be addressed after a 300,00 pounds sterling reinforcement of stands at the Cardiff Millennium Stadium was required to satisfy safety regulations for a rock concert. Any new findings resulting from the investigation board will be passed on to the developers of new stadiums.

Termite aided design

Article Abstract:

The Millenium Conservation Centre, London Zoo, London, England, was designed as a low energy building to house a range of creatures and to cope with around 500 visitors daily. Architect Philip Wharmby was inspired by the idea of termite mounds and incorporated some of their features into his design, such as in the cooling system. The roof of the building was difficult to construct and it cost over 200,000 pounds sterling. The building cost a total of 4.4 million pounds sterling.
