Article Abstract:

Roofing contractor Rossway Dowd fitted air skates to the bottom of scaffold towers in order to ensure that the refurbishment of a factory roof in Birmingham, England, was completed on time. English Partnerships required the replacement of 26,000 sq mt of industrial roof and the painting of supporting steelwork in under six months, so it was not possible for Rossway Dowd to use conventional methods. After some initial problems were overcome, it was possible for the contractors to finish work on each double-bay section in only one week.

Councils face 500 million pounds sterling bill for fire-risk blocks

Article Abstract:

A total of 500 council owned residential tower blocks need re-cladding in order to make them fire-safe, according to a report carried out by the Department of the Environment. The cost is expected to reach 1 million pounds sterling for each block and councils will have to pick up the 500 million pounds sterling price tag. A fatal fire in Scotland highlighted the weakness of tower cladding to resist fire, forcing government and local councils to review safety features.

Rock face

Article Abstract:

The natural weight of stone can be prohibitive to its use as a cladding material on building projects. Essex-based The Lightweight Stone Company has overcome this problem by combining stone veneers onto aluminium honeycomb composite panels, which reduces the weight while retaining the outward appearance of a stone panel. The panels have been installed on the cruise liner QE2 because of their weight.
