Sturgeon fishing banned for 40 years

Article Abstract:

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission has implemented a 40 year ban for sturgeon fishing on the entire Atlantic Coast, an action believed to be the longest fishing closure in history. The order will allow any fish spawned in 1998 to reach maturity and then protect 20 years of breeding after that. Sturgeons are considered as the largest and longest-lived fish in the world, with the species dating back 70 million years ago. The species are believed to live 60 years and reach lengths of 14 feet and reach weighs of over 800 pounds.
