Sustainable design will be key issue of the 1990s, AIA president says

Article Abstract:

Environmental concerns will play a major role in the 1990s and the construction industry intends to focus on creating sustainable designs that would address these issues. American Institute of Architects (AIA) Pres Susan Maxman urges her colleagues to develop a vision to achieve this end and calls for cooperation with building product manufacturers and other groups. The AIA has also launched activities that will inform the public more about sustainable design. Meanwhile, industry experts advocate the use of green building products such as Air-Krete and conventional building materials that can be salvaged or recycled.

Article Abstract:

The focus on environmental issues has led to the development of the 'Green Building Guide' which quantifies a building's degree of being environmentally friendly. The document contains information on various schemes for an earth friendly structure. It discusses issues on water, energy, building materials and solid waste and evaluates the effect of buildings on nature and environmental quality. Meanwhile, the Green Builder Program trains builders on basic environmental concerns and its relation to housing. This will enable them to inform and provide their clients with sustainable services and products.

Lead-based paint regulations may prove burdensome to remodelers

Article Abstract:

The government is addressing the potential hazards caused by lead-based paints and may develop a standard by the end of 1993 or in 1994. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has published a booklet entitled 'Working with Lead in the Construction Industry' which reflects what new lead standards might provide for. Remodelers voiced their concern that too stringent laws may results in losses to the remodeling industry while providing only minimal health benefits. They see the need to address both health and cost when formulating the proposed regulations on lead-based paints.
