Tarmac housing sale surprises City

Article Abstract:

Tarmac is looking to move into new areas, including facilities management and aggregates, and in order to fund this strategy will sell off its housebuilding activities. The division, which employs 2,000 people, could also become part of a joint venture deal. It has net assets worth 339 million pounds sterling, but Tarmac is seeking up to 400 million pounds sterling.

Tory MPs lobby to spark housing market

Article Abstract:

The government is under pressure from backbench Conservative MPs to state its clear intention to cut taxes, thus giving a boost to the housing market. They are also calling for no further cuts to be made in Mortgage Interest Relief at Source (MIRAS). They believe that the government must now make a firm commitment on tax reductions for the next two-three years.

January chills housing starts

Article Abstract:

Housing starts in the period Nov 1994-Jan 1995 were 45,200, down by 5% from the year-earlier period, according to the DOE. Private starts were down 8% from the previous three months to 37,800. However, the House Builders Federation believes that the situation will soon start to improve, with starts being boosted by the general recovery in consumer confidence.
