Tax report under fire as Congress mulls laws

Article Abstract:

Senators Judd Gregg and Herb Kohl have filed a bill with the US Senate that would prevent states from collecting sales taxes from Internet companies that have no physical presence in these states. The bill, called the New Economy Tax Simplification Act, contains all the nexus provisions of the Advisory Commission on Electronic Commerce' report. Sen Gregg said the bill would extend the approach that currently governs catalog sales on the Internet.

States add use tax to this year's tax forms

Article Abstract:

Several states are planning to collect use taxes from their residents to compensate for lost sales tax revenues that should have been imposed on electronic commerce transactions. Consumers are required by law to pay use taxes when they purchase goods from out-of-state retailers that do not charge sales taxes in their jurisdictions. That law has not been enforced strictly in the past for a variety of reasons. However, states want compliance with the law due to the significant growth of Internet sales.
