Thin stone cladding

Article Abstract:

The long-term effectiveness of thin stone cladding is being examined. Only 2 buildings have employed this system. The Wesleyan Assurance building, Birmingham has had problems with resin seepage and the Merry Hill complex, Dudley has had problems with staining from sealant oils. Thin stone cladding relies on resin bonding for panel fixture onto the aluminium honeycomb backing. The epoxy bonding mechanism relies on aerospace techology which is a new technique not tested by time. Other defects could be microcracking and bowing due to thermal and wind pressure.

Role in stone

Article Abstract:

Szerelmey Managing Director Paul Coleman confirms that the stone work company has changed its policy of working for contractors to working directly with clients. The company has a annual turnover of between 7-8 million pounds sterling and employs around 80 staff which includes 35 craftsmen. Company management found that Szerelmey was often having to unfairly reduce its prices in order to meet the main contractors demands. Coleman is finding it increasingly difficult to attract people with the right skills to the company.
