Article Abstract:

Orders for new construction increased by 2% in the UK for the first Qtr of 1993 compared to the same period in 1992. Housebuilding, public sector constuction and infrastructure work have increased to 1.7 billion pounds sterling in the first Qtr of 1993, compared to 1.3 billion pounds sterling in the first Qtr of 1992. Commercial and industrial sector work has decreased from 3.7 billion pounds sterling in the first Qtr of 1992 to 3.3 billion pounds sterling in the first Qtr of 1993. There were 34,000 new private housing starts in the first Qtr of 1993.

UK building statistics for the final Qtr of 1992 are poor due to the damage done by the sterling crisis. Total new construction orders decreased by 10% to 3.9 billion pounds sterling compared to the same period in 1991. Infrastructure orders increased by 23% to 954 million pounds sterling compared to the same period in 1991. Residential housing decreased to 27,600. Private industrial orders decreased by 31% to 314 million pounds sterling and commerical orders by 28% to 868 million pounds sterling.
