Time for BEC to play follow the leader

Article Abstract:

The new director general of the Building Employers Confederation (BEC), Ian Deslandes is able and experienced and deserves the support of his officials. The BEC has had three director generals since 1979 and needs to rally behind a storng leader. Deslandes should take action to merge the BEC with other construction industry groups, particularly the Federation of Civil Engineering Contractors. His position should be more powerful and have the visible support of the members as demonstrated by holding regular elections.

Goodbye to all that

Article Abstract:

There are still a number of difficult areas in the UK construction industry. These include various methods of procurement, such as competitive fee bidding, and the creation of a quality and price mechanism for selecting consultants. Despite this, a great deal of progress has been made over recent years, and the Construction Industry Board has worked very hard. The 'Construction the Team' report was particularly influential in bringing about improvements in construction industry working methods.

The emperor's new clothes

Article Abstract:

Martin Laing has been appointed chairman of the Construction Industry Employers Council (CIEC), replacing Sir Brian Hill. Laing is not expected to be supported by any full-time or permanent staff at the CIEC; with assistance coming from officials of member companies, who like Laing, have responsibilities to their own corporations. It is argued that unless Laing is supplied with staff support little will change within the industry.
