UPS wins small victory over German post

Article Abstract:

The United Parcel Service of America Inc (UPS) won a small victory over longtime rival Deutsche Post when a German regulatory authority orderred the German Post Office to deliver UPS' and other competitors' mail that is more than 200 grams and to do it at a discount. The ruling is expected to have far-reaching implications, especially if the weight level is lowered. It could also have impact on a case that UPS brought against Deutsche Post. The lawsuit charged Deutsche Post with cross-subsidizing its money- losing parcel division with profits from monopoly mail deliveries.

In victory for UPS, EC will probe subsidizing of deliveries by German Post

Article Abstract:

The European Community has launched an investigation into Deutsche Post's cross-subsidy of parcel delivery service using letter mail monopoly profits. The investigation represents a victory for United Parcel Service, which has long been critical of the cross subsidy. Despite a $206 million loss in its parcel service business, critics say the German Post is able to offer discounts as high as 60% in its parcel delivery service due to the cross subsidy.

The new deal also increased the maximum interest that foreign publishers could buy in a Canadian publication from 25% to 49%.
