Developments in German direct marketing law

Article Abstract:

Germany's direct marketing industry has been at the forefront of a series of legal changes in the country that are aimed at liberalizing its legal framework. One of the most important is the new data protection law. The new draft has scrapped a provision in the old draft that required direct marketers to reveal the source of their data on the envelope. Also, an EU e-commerce directive is repealing two laws passed in the 1930s that have shackled much direct marketing activity.

E-mailers: watch your manners in Germany

Article Abstract:

E-mail marketers that are planning to target German Web shoppers should mind their manners for fear of losing their prospects and customers. A survey of 2,518 online germans revealed that 60% resented e-mails without subject headings. Other vexing issues for the Germans include follow-up e- mails, the informal way with which prospects, particularly women, are being addressed, the lack of salutation and no formal closing.
