Waiting for the next retail revolution

Article Abstract:

Some industry observers suggest the town centre retail market will improve over the next few years as more brownfield sites are released for development and demand for additional space grows. Others point to the high cost of building in town centres. The UK government have stopped the construction of out-of-town shopping centres and have called for the rejuvenation of town centre retail markets. It is predicted there will be only one new out-of-town building development in 2000. Town centre developments are expected to rise to 26 in 2000, from just seven in 1998.

Artists in hard hats

Article Abstract:

Some architectural teams, working on construction projects, are using artists as part of the team. The architects making the designs for the 5 million pounds sterling renovation work on the Arnolfini gallery in Bristol, England, had to agree to choose an artist to be part of the team. The Royal Society of Art supports artists being involved in projects before they have been built. Architects MacCormac Jamieson Prichard are working on the 24 million pounds sterling Phoenix urban renewal scheme in Coventry, England, with the help of Sculptor Susanna Heron.

Volume business

Article Abstract:

The UK booksellers market was worth 1.8 billion pounds sterling in 1998. US booksellers are transforming the UK market by introducing superstores which offer customers coffee shops and sitting areas. UK booksellers are retaliating by opening their own superstores and increasing the number of town centre outlets. Waterstone's has opened a 1.5 million pounds sterling superstore in Glasgow, which has been architecturally designed to create the right atmosphere for people to browse through books.
