What makes fiber glass shingles work?

Article Abstract:

Optimal shingle performance can be achieved by considering its material properties and application. Consideration of such factors would allow better performance and prevention of shingle failure. For instance, a lower weight fiber glass mat, built with proper spring, binder and type of glass fiber, could perform properly when created with a more flexible, longer weathering asphalt. Deck movement, inadequate ventilation, improper installation and weather conditions also affect non-product related single failures.

Industry must take part in regulatory developments

Article Abstract:

Several regulatory developments, particularly on environmental standards, demand attention from roof coatings manufacturers. The need to play an active role in the regulatory process is exemplified by the Roof Coatings Manufacturers Assn, which has been participating in different forums to help member contractors cope up with product and process regulation. Among the more recent rules are a new lower-level ozone standard and the EPA's Architectural Coating Rule.

Modified bitumens offer wide array of products, applications

Article Abstract:

The use of modified bitumen roofing is increasingly becoming popular and product options are also growing in number. Options now include asphalt- or coal tar-based systems that can be used with fiber-glass and polyester. Modified bitumen, which showed an increase of 5% in usage in 1999, can also use such polymer materials as atactic polypropylene (APP), styrene butadiene styrene (SBS), Styrene-Ethylene-Butylene-Styrene (SEBS) and SBR, among others.
