United Kingdom mechanical engineering firm Drake and Scull's company Intranet communications network provides global users with access to business information. The system is secure from uninvited guests through password-protection and an electronic firewall set up by the security software package Solstice. The company has found the system invaluable and is interested in expanding links to other companies via extranet networks.

Article Abstract:

Pat Pinnington has been involved in the door and window industry for over 40 years and has been an independent consultant since 1981. He has installed a System Ruschoff test rig at his Norfolk home, which allows him to advise cliients on whether their products will meet British Standards. He has also produced designs for several system producers and is technical officer for the Council for Aluminium in Building.

Well connected: sharing information electronically between different sites in a company can boost productivity

Article Abstract:

The benefits of computers come when information can be shared and reused by other departments. The current networking boom is being driven by companies connecting computers based at differed sites, and the Internet is favoured as it is an open system. Many construction firms are considering groupware applications enabling simultaneous work on the same document.
