What the euro means for construction

Article Abstract:

UK industries must prepare for the introduction of a single European currency in January 1999 as the impact of a new monetary system will have far reaching consequences for all business. Euro friendly firms may find they have an advantage when dealing with European business. Firms will benefit from increased trading abroad, while financial gains will be made due to a lack of interest rate calculations. Updating software systems will be one of the most important challenges to be met by business.

Top 200

Article Abstract:

The UK's leading 200 architects, consulting engineers, building surveyors and quantity surveyors have all seen growing demand for their services since autumn 1997. The leading 10 companies in each of the four categories saw a staff growth rate of 6% in the period autumn 1997 to autumn 1998, and further growth is planned. However, there has been a decline in the number of consultants anticipating a rise in commissions in the coming 12 months.

Crisis? Whose crisis?

Article Abstract:

Employers within the United Kingdom construction industry are finding it increasingly difficult to find good workers with key skills and experience. Larger construction groups seem to be unaffected by the skills shortage because they can arrange fixed-price work to secure costs. Subcontractors, however, are working to lower profit margins due to increased labour rates.
