When overseas ...

Article Abstract:

Specification writers for the construction industry outside the UK must be aware of local regulations to ensure their work meets the necessary standards. The use of local experts can help in understanding local procedures, in attitudes to particular designs and in the translation of documents. But the local experts should not be left to complete any design work. If necessary the local office can be responsible for translating the specification into a foreign language. The specification writer should always use English in the report.

Abroad-minded

Article Abstract:

UK construction companies are beginning to widen the scope of their work abroad. The US is still their largest market, but they are now focusing increasingly on countries which have the potential for strong economic growth. Overseas contracting work remains dominated by the largest construction companies, with fewer than 25 of the UK's leading 50 construction companies having overseas operations. The largest overseas contracting operations are run by Bovis, which has overseas turnover of around 1 billion pounds sterling a year.

Domestic bliss

Article Abstract:

UK house builders have reported a positive set of financial results for 1996 to 1997, with the average total margins rising from 9.2% in 1996 to 11.7% in 1997. Bovis Homes recorded the best total margins for 1997 at 15.4% from 11% in 1996. Wimpey Homes sold a total of 10,500 homes in 1997 with 1,000 being social sales. Fear over interest rate rises and increasing land prices have placed extra pressure on the industry although there is no sign of sales slowing.
