Who buys our homes? Some facts and figures

Article Abstract:

Residents of manufactured homes are likely to have lower educational levels and income than other householders, according to a study by demographers. Households in factory-built homes had median annual income of $20,026, vs other households' median income of $30,531. Around half of the manufactured housing units are located in the Southern US, and 52% are sited outside of US metropolitan areas. In 1990 there were 7.4 million occupied factory-built homes in the US, accounting for 6% of all occupied housing units. The percentage represents an increase from 5% in 1980. Size of the units, on average, also is rising, to 1,210 square feet in 1990.
