Why we must outlaw the cowboys

Article Abstract:

It is clear that rogue builders have a very negative impact on the reputation of the construction industry in the UK. However, the government is wrong to expect the construction industry to deal with rogue builders alone, especially as nobody knows who many of these builders are. Many observers feel that there is a need for legislation on this issue. Under such legislation, it would be illegal for any builder or tradesperson to undertake domestic works without being registered. There is also a need for a construction ombudsman responsible for regulating disputes between builders and homeowners.

High noon for the cowboys?

Article Abstract:

The UK government has proposed measures to curb the practice of rouge construction workers, often known as cowboys. The Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) has produced a consultation report which claims there were over 93,000 official complaints made against the building sector during 1995 to 1996. Many of the problems centered on work done in private homes by so called cowboy tradespeople. The DETR recommends the establishment of a bonded organisation which would provide customers with a course of redress should work not be carried out properly.

Put the housing in order

Article Abstract:

Charles Gallagher, president of the House Builders Federation, has called on the Council of Mortgage Lenders to help kick-start the housing market. He wants mortgage interest relief at source to be extended to a threshold of 50,000 pounds sterling for first-time buyers. Gallagher estimates that a kick-start would require 2 billion pounds sterling.
