Work perfect

Article Abstract:

The higher status and salary of site managers in the computing industry is compared with their counterparts in the construction industry, with the typical work of Barbara Gatward, IBM project manager, described. It is recognised that project managers in the computer industry are vital as they obtain a lot of revenue for the firm. Such managers earn 40,000-50,000 pounds sterling a year, with promotion prospects always available. Working hours are 40-50 per week, with the project managers operating under a bonus scheme for project timeliness. Training courses are frequent.

Costing quality

Article Abstract:

Studies show that the upgrade of construction design management systems to ISO9001 standards costs as much as it saves, which is approximately 4% of the surveyed firms turnover. Savings in project time are negated due to the extra administrative functions which are necessary with the new methodology. More time is taken to support library and archive functions. Operational risks are reduced, however, making the procedure justifiable.
