All smiles down the aisles?: The big supermarkets are constantly look for ways to win your loyalty. But who's winning the price war?

Article Abstract:

A report has look at over 5,000 supermarket prices and considered whether they offer better value than other high street shops. The shopping list included several well known brands, fresh fruit and vegetables, and it was found that savings of at least a third can be made by choosing the own brand, rather than the big-name. The differences in price varied between 5.06 pounds sterling and 13.20 pounds sterling. Researchers also tested home delivery services including Flanagans Supermarket Direct, Iceland, Sainsbury, Somerfield and Tesco.

The Ford Galaxy, Volkswagen Sharan and Seat Alhambra multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) share design, parts and are built at the same plant. Of the three, the Alhambra is currently the best value for money. Similarly, the Citroen Synergie, Fiat Ulysse, Lancia Zeta, and Peugeot 806 MPVs were also produced in collaboration and the Synergie is currently the best buy. Other twins include the Citroen Saxo and Peugeot 106; the Ford Fiesta and the Mazda 121; and the Honda Accord and Rover 600.

Article Abstract:

The level of traffic deaths in the UK, almost 1,500 fatalities in 1991, is high vs the level in other countries in Europe. A European Commission report, to which researchers at Transport Research Laboratory, UK, contributed, puts a case for a European Standard for cars in relation to pedestrian safety. A different Transport Research Laboratory survey finds that traffic calming methods could save many lives and injuries.
