Camcorders: what's new?

Article Abstract:

Camcorders, combined portable video cameras and cassette recorders, are quite easy to use and are quite reliable. Only 9% of camcorders bought since 1990 by 3,188 'Which?' subscribers had a fault. The Sony CCD-FX 500 is the best choice in 8mm camcorders, and costs 700 pounds sterling. The picture quality of the Panasonic NV-G 101 is good among VHS-C camcorders, but sound quality is poor. The 850 pound sterling Sony CCD-RT707 is the best high-band camcorder. Standard features on camcorders are presented. Information on thirteen camcorders, including features, specifications and performance, is also presented.

Fancy filming

Article Abstract:

Super-VHS-C and Hi8 camcorders are better than standard 8mmm and VHS-C camcorders, particularly for copy-editing and for playing on high-definition televisions. Both give a sharper picture with clearer colour. There is less deterioration in picture quality when copying. The Hi8 camcorders are the best. Tapes cost twice as much as ordinary tapes. The Fujix FH80 and the Sony CCD-TR705 are recommended for travelling as they are light. The Canon EX 1Hi is the best for serious film-making.
